Gary H. Bechtel

Gary Bechtel received his high school degree from Robert Louis Stevenson School and went on to graduate from the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, California, with a BA in Business Administration. He began his professional career working at Bechtel Corporation in Labor Relations. It was this frontline interaction that prompted him to take some after-hour classes in labor law from Golden Gate University. His career included numerous job assignments that required multiple relocations throughout the United States. He relocated back to the San Francisco Bay Area to assume responsibility for one of the operating companies that included national and international projects. He was subsequently elected to the board of directors of the Bechtel Group of Companies. He retired at age 45 and moved back to Charlotte, North Carolina, to own and manage a NASCAR Cup team and two Busch teams.

Gary's involvement with Mid-Peninsula came as a result of having two of his three children graduate from the school. His third child went to Mid-Peninsula for a year and a half and transferred to Pinewood where she graduated. He was asked to serve on the board of trustees at Mid-Peninsula, and was subsequently elected to be board chair. At the end of his term, he spent more time pursing other intellectual and emotional interests in his life, which include Conservation, Ranch Management and other outdoor activities. It was through these interests that led him to serve presently on the boards of the California Conservation Fund, California Outdoor Heritage Alliance and Delta Waterfowl.

He recently re-joined the Mid-Peninsula board of trustees as the board chair because he "remembers daily the significant positive impact the School had on his entire Family".
