Douglas C. Thompson, Head of School

Doug is in his 10th year as Head of School of Mid-Peninsula High School. Doug earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UCSB and his Master of Arts degree and his PhD in Comparative Literature from UCLA.

Doug feels most strongly that education cannot just be a race to accumulate factual knowledge. He believes a thoughtful and ethical approach to education must take into account the fact that students learn differently, and that society as a whole benefits when these differences are respected and when all students are given a genuine and legitimate opportunity to learn.

What first drew Doug to Mid-Peninsula was the building itself. He first toured the building by himself on a Saturday, and was struck by its openness and warmth. Later, when Doug returned to meet with students, he saw how these qualities were manifested in them. Mid-Peninsula students are unusually thoughtful and kind and he wanted to work at a school where these qualities are so evident.

Doug was raised in Brazil. He is bilingual in Portuguese and English, and tries very hard to keep up a connection with Brazilian language and culture. To that end, he plays soccer every weekend and is an avid singer and player of Bossa Nova music.
